My Story
Carrying Desert Folk Traditions Into a Sound Without Borders
Carrying Desert Folk Traditions Into a Sound Without Borders
This is Sameer, hailing from the desserts of Rajasthan, I was immersed in the tradition of folk melodies from an early age. Growing up in the resonant legacy of the Manganiyar community, music has been my first language. Where I come from songs are woven into daily life, I was surrounded by voices, instruments, and stories long before I understood their meaning. I learned by watching elders sing, by feeling the rhythm of gatherings, and by absorbing melodies that had been passed down for generations. Now I seek to shape this inherited legacy with my own voice, I sing to honor where I come from while expressing who I am.
Surrounded by the soulful strains of instruments like the sarangi, dholak, and khartal, I developed a deep respect for the storytelling power of folk music, with songs that carry the essence of desert life, its joys, struggles, and timeless wisdom. But growing up in the new India, the global sounds reached my traditional ears as well. Taking influences from western harmony and contemporary arrangements, I have envisioned a new path, a fusion of the old and the new. By weaving together the earthy cadences of Rajasthani folk with jazz, rock, blues, and world music, I am building bridges between cultures and generations. Rooted in Rajasthani folk and inspired by Sufi thought, I use music as a space for devotion and self-reflection..
This vision is now taking shape in the form of a fusion band, where desert folk met western instrumentation to create something fresh, vibrant, and universal. The band's music is not just performance, it is an exploration, an experiment, and a celebration of diversity through sound.
For me music is a language that knows no borders. Through this journey, I aspire to carry the spirit of Rajasthan onto global stages, ensuring that the soul of folk continues to live, evolve, and inspire in new, unexpected ways.
